With the semester here coming to a close, I felt like a bit of a retrospective was in order. There’s a strong possibility that this is going to be the last day I’ll have the time to write something this long (and it is a bit of a long one, I’m afraid), because I’m moving to Moholt on Tuesday and have my neuro exam on Thursday and then it’s Oslo and home and Christmas, and over the flurry of activity I’ll all but forget that I wanted to do this. So here’s my long-ish, but by no means exhaustive Best of Trondheim 2012 list. Happy third advent, everybody!
***
Album: Kaizers Orchestra — ‘Ompa til du dør’. To say it was love at first listen would be a lie, because it’s just so weird, but it gets better the more time you spend with it, and it’s been on almost constant loop during the last couple of days. Honorable mention: The Black Keys — ‘El Camino’
Book (fiction): John Green & David Leviathan — ‘Will Grayson, Will Grayson’. I read this on the way to Tromsø and it was stunningly good, deep and well-written. I have a soft spot for YA fiction, and to see it done so well and so vampirelessly makes me very, very happy.
Book (nonfiction): Stephen Clarke — ‘1000 Years of Annoying the French’. A remarkably entertaining book (especially for one that size) that details the tumultuous relationship between France and Britain in what might be the most hilarious way possible.
Song: This one’s the hardest to choose. I learned to sing along to so many songs that keep cropping up in KSG and general student culture (Vazelina Bilopphøggers’ ‘Surfbrett’, ‘Nu klinger’, that skål-song, UKA-03’s ‘Rocka i esken’, Kaizers’ ‘Resistansen’), plus there’s my discovery of tuvan throat singing; but if I had to pick a leitmotif for this semester, it would be ‘Far over the misty mountains cold’ from the Hobbit-trailer. It’s in my Trondheim playlist in two different versions, it’s topically appropriate, and this version by Trondhjem Studentersangforening still gives me goosebumps a month and a half after the Hobbit-festmøte.
Youtube Video: Raske Menn — World History in 5 Minutes (Norwegian with English subtitles) Go watch it. Now. I’ll wait.
Movie: It’s not that I didn’t go to movie Sunday at Storsalen with surprising regularity, and that their film selection wasn’t pretty damn awesome. It wasn’t that ‘Brave’ and ‘Skyfall’, which I both saw at the regular cinema, weren’t also fantastic. But if there is anybody who doubted that the Hobbit wasn’t going to be my number one movie this semester: we need to hang out more in the future.
Knitting project: My Mariusgenser. I feel so well-assimilated when I wear it (and I wear it often), and it’s weird to think that I never actually wrote a separate post for it! Also, I finished it on Lofoten, which makes me smile to think of every time I put it on.
New foodstuff: Brunost! I’ve had it for almost every breakfast since I’ve gotten here, and I haven’t gotten the least bit sick of it yet.
Dish: We make a lot of great dishes in Lyche and I love eating there, but the Lofotlam we had in Ramberg was simply out of this world. Totally worth the steep price tag.
Drink: For taste, I’ve developed a weird attachment to Frydenlund Bayer. For entertainment value, flaming cointreau shots are probably on the top of that particular list. Shhh, don’t tell the others.
Random little moment of awe and wonder: Among a host of awesome little moments, what sticks out is the first time I ever tried opening a door with my gang card and having it work.
Quiet evening in: Aurora watching on Lofoten. Oh.
Night out: Lyche Inn/Ut. November saw a decent increase in partying on my side, and Inn/Ut was quite tame compared to much of it. But Inn/Ut wasn’t just a night out, I’d put so much work in it and it turned out so well, and I spent the night in a haze of happiness that had very little to do with alcohol.
Norwegian dialect: Stavanger, of course! WHAT ELSE WOULD IT BE?!
Frohen dritten Advent, allerseits!

Knapper Zweiter: The Black Keys — ‘El Camino’
Buch (Belletristik): John Green & David Leviathan — ‘Will Grayson, Will Grayson’.
Buch (Sachbuch): Stephen Clarke — ‘1000 Years of Annoying the French’. In lustig.
WAS DENN SONST?!
